What was the mystery?

The mystery the whole time was “Where are we?” I just didn’t know when I was making it that that’s what it would be.

I kept layering the weathered stone pier over the ocean over the room with the chandelier, trying to make all three exist in the same impossible place. It was really hard to blend them together, and it still didn’t come out exactly like I had it in my head.

Eventually, though, I think I found the answer.

What changed?

Like every piece, the ending is completely different from the beginning. Everything changed.

In my head, I wanted the door to obviously be under the pier with the chandelier. I spent a lot of time trying to make that work. Then the pier became a gallery, the gallery became a forest, and somehow the ocean stayed through it all.

I’m still investigating how to blend two photos together so they feel like they’ve always belonged in the same place.

Biggest surprise?

Honestly, my biggest surprise was how well the boat blended into the new pond and how easily the fox went into the boat.

After hours of fighting the pier, the door, and the chandelier, it was nice for something to go my way without an argument.

What almost happened?

I almost stopped working on this piece altogether.

There was a point where I just couldn’t get the pier, door, ocean, and chandelier to become what I could see in my head. But I had already put too much time into it, and I didn’t want to give it up.

So I kept investigating.
